GOLDEN STAR TECHNOLOGIES
*CUSTOMER REPORTS* that this 80286-based computer is compatible with
current Above Boards and Matched Memory Classic.
This computer runs the data bus at 10MHz with the option of operating at a
non-IBM AT standard of zero wait states, or the IBM AT standard one wait
state. This computer must be set to one wait state for the Above Board or
Matched Memory Classic to operate correctly. Zero wait states will cause
parity errors and occasional lockups during the computers' power-on self
test. Uses expanded and extended memory fine.
HEADLAND 286 16MHZ
*CUSTOMER REPORT* of INCOMPATIBILITY with Intel Above Boards and Matched
Memory Classic. Report indicated that the existence of an Above Board in
this system would cause floppy drive problems whether the EMM.SYS driver
was installed or not, no matter how the Above Board was configured.
HONEYWELL AP
This machine is the same as the NCR PC 8.
*CUSTOMER REPORTS* of compatibility with current Above Boards and Matched
Memory Classic. It has also been reported to be compatible with the
discontinued Above Board 286, PS/286, AT, and PS/AT. This computers'
system board has jumpers which must be set for only the actual memory on
the system board. Do not include any Intel memory board memory when
determining motherboard jumper settings. Make sure bus is set at 1 wait
state, (IBM standard.)
HP-VECTRA "ES"
The Hewlett-Packard Vectra "ES" series computer is compatible with current
Above Boards and Matched Memory Classic as extended or expanded memory.
If an Intel memory board is to provide expanded memory, the following
note explains some things to be aware of.
Tech Note: This 80286-based version of the ES Series has a socketed 80286
(according to reports) and can be run at 8 or 12 MHz. They also include a
feature called "Extended BIOS." Extended BIOS permits the use of the
HUMAN INTERFACE LOOP (HIL), which allows the user to access 7 additional
devices which are "daisy-chained" through the same interrupt structure.
These devices include a Mouse, Tablet, Bar Code Reader and Touch Screen as
well as others.
HOWEVER...The HIL uses INT 67h, which is the EMS interrupt, so the user
must choose which of these two functions they want to use, since they will
be mutually exclusive. If they choose to use LIM Expanded Memory, they
must disable the HIL from the SETUP menu of the HP. There is a hidden
command, "YADA", which when entered at the menu prompt which will reveal a
hidden menu. The hidden menu will then offer the choice of enabling or
disabling the HIL. For further infomation, we recommend they contact HP's
Technical Service Center or their dealer.
HP-VECTRA
*CUSTOMER REPORTS* of compatibility with current Above Boards and Matched
Memory Classic. Only the 8MHz Vectras are compatible with the
discontinued Above Board AT and PS/AT.
AUTOCAD & THE HP VECTRA
*CUSTOMER REPORT* In the HP Vectra, AutoCAD 2.6 locks up soon after
power-up if EMM.SYS is installed. Hewlett Packard has software to fix the
problem that they will send to users. The earlier 2.53 release of AutoCAD
works fine with the HP Vectra, as apparently later releases of Autocad do.
MS WORD & THE HP VECTRA
WORD 2.1 does not work in an HP Vectra with BIOS ROM version A01.04 or
lower when EMM.SYS is installed. WORD 3.0 and 3.1 work fine with EMM.SYS
installed, however, the computer locks up during a Spell Check. HP
acknowledges the problem and will make the necessary corrections.
HYUNDAI 286
This computer is compatible with current Above Boards and Matched Memory
Classic for both expanded and extended memory.
HYUNDAI 286C
Mixed CUSTOMER REPORTS on this machine with current Above Boards and
Matched Memory Classic.
In some Hyundai 286C systems customers have had no problems setting up the
Above Board or Matched Memory Classic for EXTended or EXPanded memory.
However, it is necessary to run MANUAL SETUP in SETBOARD and specify a
12MHz bus speed. Due to the bus speed of this system, the discontinued
Above Board AT and PS/AT are not compatible with this computer.
In other Hyundai 286c computers, current Above Boards and Matched Memory
Classic cannot be set up as exTENded memory at all but can be set up as
exPANded. There are sockets on the motherboard to go up to 1Mb. It might
be necessary for the motherboard to be fully populated before any add-in
board can provide exTENded memory in these systems.
IBM PC/AT & AT/339
Intel has tested the Above Board ISA, Plus, Plus 8, and the Matched Memory
Classic in the IBM AT and they are compatible. Both versions of the IBM
AT, (6MHz and 8MHz) were tested. The IBM AT has BIOS ROM sockets on the
system board that decode the address range E000-EFFF which makes it
impossible for the Above Board ISA to map memory into this address space.
These computers are also compatible with the discontinued Above Board 286,
PS/286, AT & PS/AT.
IBM 286 XT
Compatible with current Above Boards and Matched Memory Classic Boards, as
well as with the discontinued Above Board 286 and PS/286. Not compatible
with the discontinued Above Board AT, PS/AT, PC or PS/PC.
Tech Notes: This system has redundant BIOS code located at E0000. Since
the system does not contain the extra sockets necessary for BIOS chips
addressed at E0000, it wasn't absolutely necessary in the system design to
allow for decode of the extra address needed to separate the E0000 block
from the F0000 block. This lack of decoding capability results in the
same code being located in both the F0000 and E0000 blocks.
Therefore, even though the 286 XT doesn't actually need the E0000 block
for BIOS code, it is unavailable for other system uses (like the Above
Board's page frame) because of the lack of address decoding to separate it
from the F0000 block where the BIOS is located.
This is different from the PC/AT, which provides 2 extra sockets for
additional BIOS chips which can be located in the E0000 block. Its design
had to provide decoding for the E0000 and F0000 blocks. (In this case the
E0000 block is unavailable for the Above Boards's page frame because the
system has reserved the space for its BIOS.)
IBM 3270 AT
This 80286-based computer is compatible with current Above Boards and
Matched Memory Classic as well as with the discontinued Above Board 286,
PS/286, AT, and PS/AT.
The Intel TESTAB program will not run in this computer. It reports all
memory chips as bad.
IBM 3270 ATG (GX)
INCOMPATIBLE with Above Boards and Matched Memory Classic. We were
working into this with IBM in 1986 to identify the problems and resolve
them if possible, but were unable to find a way to make them compatible.
IBM 7552 INDUSTRIAL SYSTEM
*CUSTOMER REPORTS* that this 80286-based computer is hardware compatible
with current Above Boards and Matched Memory Classic Boards. We have
reports that SETBOARD locks up when attempting to write to the EEPROM. You
must put the Above Board Plus in another computer, run SETBOARD, and then
put the board back into the 7552. EMM and extended memory work fine once
the board is configured.
The IBM 7552 is an industrial chassis computer with a standard bus and a
16-bit Microchannel bus. IBM calls the BIOS the "AT Plus BIOS".
IBM MODEL 25 286
Compatible with current Above Boards and Matched Memory Classic boards,
was not tested with discontinued Above Boards.
IBM PS/2 MODEL 30/286
Compatible with the Above Board ISA, Plus, Plus 8, and the Matched Memory
Classic boards, as well as the discontinued Above Board 286 & PS/286.
This computer runs at 10MHz, comes with VGA graphics, 20Mb hard disk,
1.44Mb diskette drive, and .5Mb of memory that you can expand to 4Mb on
the system board. IBM claims that it will perform like a PS/2 with the
compatibility of an IBM PC.
A NO-BOOT condition or scrambled video will occur if the PC-selection chip
is installed on an Above Board or Matched Memory Classic. The pc-
selection chip is required for the 8086 version of the MOD 30 so it's easy
to see how this can happen.
ABOVE BOARD ISA AND MODEL 30/286 TECH NOTES:
1) With the Above Board ISA only, the HWSETUP program will automatically
detect an IBM Model 30/286 and configure the Above Board ISA for a 10MHz
BUS SPEED, 8-BIT EMS Transfer Rate. It is not possible to implement the
16-BIT EMS Transfer Rate on the IBM Model 30/286 so no selection is
provided for it.
2) Currently, the HWSETUP incorrectly configures an IBM PS/2 Model 30/286
100ns SIMMs, 10MHz bus, (this is 2 wait states). This may cause lockups
in Windows 3.1.
DEFAULT: SIMM Speed 100ns, Bus Speed 10MHz: 2 wait state memory.
Change to SIMM speed 80ns, Bus Speed 10MHz for 1 wait state memory.
Change to SIMM speed 80ns, Bus Speed 8MHz for 0 wait state memory.
Don't use 0 wait state memory when configuring expanded memory. Only
use 0 wait state memory for all extended memory. Expanded memory
requires 1 wait state, (this is covered in the Errata).
IRQ5 AND THE IBM MODEL 30/386
A customer report indicates that IBM has reserved the use of IRQ5 for the
system and it is not available for assignment as COM3 or COM4, MOUSE,
network boards, etc. This could cause apparent failure of Above Board
PS/286 or Above Board Plus I/O serial port when the user tries to use INT
5 (the de facto industry standard for COM3).
16-BIT NETWORK CARD AND THE IBM PS/2 MODEL 30/286
Testing at Intel has shown that using a 16-bit add-in board along with a
16-bit network board in the Model 30/286 will either cause the network
board to switch to 8-bit mode or fail if 8-bit mode is not possible. The
16-bit add-in board can be ANY board. Since Above Boards and Matched
Memory Classic are 16-bit boards, the problem could occur if using a 16-
bit network board in the same system as an Above Board or Matched Memory
Classic.
IBM MODELS 50, 50Z, 55SX, 60, 65SX, 70, 80, 90, OR 95
See the Micro Channel Above Board section for the right Above Boards for
these systems.
IBM MODEL PS/1
*Customer Reports* of compatibility with the Matched Memory Classic. This
system is INCOMPATIBLE with the Above Boards Plus, Plus 8, 286, AT, PS/AT,
PC, and PS/PC because there are no full-length slots for add-in boards in
this system. These Above Boards are also too long for the optional
"Expansion chassis". We have not tested or received any customer reports
of the Above Board ISA fitting into this Chassis (the Above Board ISA is
not as long as older Above Boards and may fit in these systems).
SMARTDRV.SYS & THE PS/2 MODEL 30 286
Early versions of Smartdrv.sys and extended memory (no matter who supplies
the extended memory) would cause lockups in a IBM Model 30 286. Microsoft
has admitted a problem and has released an update for the disk caching
software. Have customers contact Microsoft if they have the problem and
smartdrv.sys date code is less than Sept. 7, 1988.
Smartdrv.sys seems to work okay with expanded memory.
HPIB INTERFACE - HEWLETT PACKARD
We have customer reports of compatibility between the HPIB Interface card
and current Above Boards as well as with the Matched Memory Classic.
The HPIB interface board uses more than 16K of memory address space in the
range CC000 through DC000. If setting up the Intel memory board to provide
expanded memory, set the HPIB switches for starting address DC000, and the
expanded memory manager to start at CC000.
